Welcome to Marol Academy!
Marol Academy first opened its doors in 2008 to provide a free primary education to children and young people in Warrap State, South Sudan. The need for education here is great: the civil war between the North and the South has disrupted education for over 50 years. The result is that more than 80% of children in rural South Sudan have not had the opportunity to attend school. We now have over 700 hundred students attending the primary school. In 2011 we opened a secondary school that now teaches 50 capable students.
What makes Marol Academy so special?
Marol Academy is a girls school that boys attend
Although Marol is a school for both girls and boys, we have a special concern for the education of girls. The literacy rate for girls in South Sudan stands at about 2%. But we believe that strong, stable and healthy communities can only be achieved if both girls and boys receive an education. At present slightly less than half the students are at primary are girls. This drops off at secondary school considerably so that presently we have only 3 girls attending. Clearly, there is still a long way to go before girls and boys have equal access to education but we have made a start.
Marol Academy is committed to sustainable education in South Sudan
Our vision is that Marol should not only educate the students of the village but that it should be a leading light for education in South Sudan. In 2011 Marol opened its doors to teachers from across Warrap State. We offered a week of teacher training in lesson planning and behaviour management to up to 40 teachers. Our plan is that Marol will eventually become a teacher training centre in the region.
