Marol Academy Primary SchoolThe primary school serves 700 children and young people. The civil war means that many young people missed out on education and it is not unusual to have students in their late teens studying the primary curriculum. Some students walk for more than an hour each way to attend school.
The primary curriculum of South Sudan lasts 7 years with students sitting a final exam. At Marol we cover Dinka, English, Maths, Science, Agriculture, Humanities and Christian Religious Education. The school employs local South Sudanese teachers, some of whom are paid salaries by the Government and some of whom are funded through fundraising initiatives in the UK and USA. The teachers often only have a primary education themselves, such was the disruption during the civil war. The primary school has 9 classrooms, a library and a school farm. |
