Marol Academy Secondary School
In April 2011 Marol Academy opened the first fully functioning secondary school in Gogrial East. For the first time the 90,000 people living here are able to access a higher level of education while still living in their rural homes. Although awareness of the school's opening was intentionally kept to a minimum, over 47 pupils participated in the first secondary school class. Over the next four years the school will continue to grow by a class a year.
In April 2013 the school year will begin again and we will have 3 classes. Students from their late teens into their late twenties are able to study at the secondary school. The curriculum lasts 4 years and follows the South Sudanese curriculum, which includes English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, Humanities and Christian Religious Education.
Some students travel up to 3 hours each way to attend a school which is, as yet, without its own building. Secondary students displace primary students from their classrooms until the pile of bricks we have bought can be turned into classrooms. We presently employ Kenyan teachers because so few South Sudanese have completed their secondary education.
