South Sudan: the world's newest nation
Conflict between the South and North of Sudan goes back over 50 years. As Sudan prepared to gain independence from joint British and Eqyptian rule, southern leaders accused the new authorities in the Khartoum of trying to impose an Islamic and Arabic identity. As a result southern army officers mutinied in 1955, sparking off a civil war between the south and the Sudanese government. The conflict ended in 1972 when the south was given a measure of autonomy. But in 1983 the Sudanese government cancelled these arrangements, sparking a new civil war. At least 1.5 million people are thought to have died and a further 4 million displaced in 22 years of guerrilla warfare that followed.
The conflict finally ended in 2005. The peace agreement gave the south regional autonomy and provided for a referendum in 2011 on independence. In January 2011 99% of southern Sudanese voted to split from Sudan. On the 9th July 2011 South Sudan became the newest naiton on earth.

Where is Marol in South Sudan?Marol Academy is in Warrap State. The state is divided into 6 counties. Marol is in Gogrial East county. About 90,000 people live in Gorgrial East, predominantly from the Dinka ethnic group. The Dinka are the largest ethnic group in South Sudan.
The Dinka farm and keep cattle to survive. From October to April South Sudan is in its dry season. During this time the Dinka rely on their cattle herding at riverside camps to graze. From May to September the rainy season transforms the landscape and allows them to grow crops in fixed settlements. The food they grow at this time must last them through the dry season too. Warrap state is the home state of the now President of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit. During the civil war between north and south, its proximity to the northern border mean that Warrap suffered significantly from ground and air attacks. |
There are only 4 other primary schools in Gogrial East that teach the full primary curriculum. Apart from Marol, we know of only one other part functioning secondary school.
