2007 |
Jok Madut Jok may properly be considered the founder of Marol Academy. Up until 2007, while living and teaching in the US, Jok was supporting the education of 37 of his school-age relatives outside the state of Sudan. Every time he returned home to the village of Marol he would be challenged by the wider need for education. So in 2007 he decided to build a school. Today, Jok is an undersecretary in the newly founded South Sudan Ministry of Culture.

2010 |
Naomi commits to being at Marol Academy full time. Further building work is completed on the primary school including the building of the library. This is funded by Vodafone World of Difference, by generous donations from students and parents of Wellington College, by churches in the UK and by child sponsorship. The first teachers arrive from Kenya, the library is constructed and the first teacher training for teachers in Gogrial East takes place. We are also excited to send Nhial, one of our South Sudanese teachers, to do his teacher training at University.

2011 |
Gordon and Joyce arrive. Gordon is a retired teacher and Joyce is a nurse and midwife. Both have extensive experience working in Africa and Marol is delighted to have them. Gordon becomes the Director of Studies for the newly opened secondary school and Joyce helps train and educate at the health clinic.

2012 |
Nhial graduates from his teacher training course at University. He is the only qualified teacher in Gogrial East. More intrepid teachers arrive from Kenya as well as bricks for the building of the secondary school.

2013 |
In 2013 we hope to be welcoming more teachers from Kenya. We are so grateful for the courage and commitment of those who have taught here over the last 2 years. As ever we need funding to enable these amazing people to join us.
Through the generous support of people in the UK we are also able to send 3 more teachers to train at University in Yei. Dut and Donato will join Nhial as the only trained teachers in Gogrial East County. In line with our vision that Marol will eventually become a teacher training centre in the region, we are also training John who will be the first qualified teacher in Panyijar County, based in the neighbouring Unity State. |
